I'm looking forward to returning to my original home land of O'ahu in July. I have an elderly mother to help care for, a daughter who is waiting to develop a new act with her ol' mother, jazz music to make and jazz music to share with the keiki. I am thrilled to be working with the wonderful Kailua Elks Lodge board members to bring our jazz education/show to the Windward side. So far, we have 2 dates with 'Aikahi & Kailua Elementary schools in July and more to follow. I have presented this very engaging show to many schools here in Northern California but I have a special place in my heart for the keiki in Hawaii. It's funny...my mother used to take opera into the schools throughout the islands some 40 years ago with Opera Players of Hawaii...guess the apple hasn't fallen too far... or maybe it's a lilikoi...crazy little lilikoi of love...

Hi Friends...it has been a while...I hope you are well and finding joy in your life. One of the joyful things in life for me is bringing music and jazz to children and I am excited to report that I will be partnering with the Kailua Elks Lodge to bring my very engaging jazz presentation with a quintet into the elementary schools on the Windward side of O'ahu. Before too long the keikis will be singing, scatting, dancing, snapping and shaking their shakers to the many different rhythms that fall under the umbrella of jazz. Stay-tuned for periodic updates...

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Hi folks....thanks for checking in! Just want to update you on the wide (and wild!) world of jazz music-making and promotion. I've been busy recording my next album with my co-producer in life, love, and music-my husband, Jeff. We've invited some pretty terrific musicians to join us on this organic, improvisational project where, with the exception of one tune, arrangements were created pretty much on the spot with the band...yes, staying true to the jazz idiom. I wanted to collaborate with and give artistic license to these wonderful and talented players; Scotty Barnhart, 18-year veteran trumpeter with the Count Basie Orchestra; Carlos Reyes, a passionate violin virtuoso; Jeff Sanford, a dynamic and playful multi-reed musician who leads the Cartoon Jazz Orchestra; World renown drummer, Akira Tana, who can create the most interesting melodies; legendary pianist Larry Vuckovich; veteran bassist, colorful in every way, Chris Amberger; one of my favorite pianists, energetic and creative Jonathan Alford; first call veteran bassist for many in the Bay Area, John Wiitala; and the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, a group of very talented and equally nice musicians living in the home land of Hawaii Nei and include bassist and leader, John Kolivas; pianist Dan Del Negro; drummer Von Baron and sax man Tim Tsukiyama. A big ALOHA to all of the musicians above for their support, positive energy and terrific musicianship!
The recordings are now in the hands of our friend and two-time Grammy-Award winning sound engineer in L.A., Woody Woodruff. So, the "birth" is getting closer...
We now have 7 videos up on www.youtube.com that come from a concert we had here in our town last August at event center, Ramekins. If you're interested just type in my name and up they should come. Feel free to leave comments if you're so inclined. I appreciate each and every one.
Soon to come...a new & improved website with some new photos and new album song clips, etc...
Please stay tuned... Oh, and by the way, thank you so much for your interest. Hope to see you soon!

Sonoma's 2010 Teen Jazz Jam Camp culminated with a terrific concert at Sonoma's Plaza amphitheatre on Sunday. 20 teens, ages 11-17, performed a total of 16 tunes learned over the 2 week camp. Pianists, guitarists, bassists, drummers, saxophonists, vocalists and even a tuba/bass trombonist made their way through clinics, jams, sectionals and rehearsals. They were wonderful and we thank Sonoma Valley Jazz Society for sponsoring 2 students and Sonoma Jazz + for their generous sponsorship!

Thank you to all who showed up and a special thanks to Dave Rohner and to my special gal pals, Dana and Tyler, who adorned me with gorgeous leis of ginger, pikaki and puakinikini. Mmmmmm. I slept with them under my nose for a few nights...thought I had ended up in heaven. So good to see family and friends and look forward to returning in 6 mos. for a CD release concert.
(Excerpt taken from 'Wine Country This Week'.)
It is a Summer Festival Like No Other...
Each year Napa Valley Festival del Sole brings together an astonishing gathering of internationally celebrated talent, and the finest in food, wine and Napa hospitality – for an unparalleled cultural experience.
The fourth annual Festival, which takes place July 17-25, features a roster of world-renowned artists that includes soprano Renée Fleming, violinists Sarah Chang and Nikolaj Znaider, pianists Leif Ove Andsnes, Antonio Pappano and Conrad Tao, jazz singer Dana Land, and Napa resident Robert Redford. The festival, renowned for its world-class concerts, exclusive receptions, lunches, dinners and art exhibitions, also includes another important tradition – giving back to the community. This year, the festival hosts three benefits and deepens its commitment to arts education and enrichment through the launch of the Bouchaine Young Artist Series.
“The tremendous support we receive from the community is inspiring,” said Festival Director Richard Walker. “We are pleased to join forces with our partners to give back to causes important to all of us.”

As 2007 comes to a close I would like to give thanks for the richness that a number of us have experienced at The Lodge at Sonoma. As I said the other night, if I could bottle it and share it with the world it would make this planet we live on a better place. The talented and sweet musicians that pour everything into their performance, the intimacy and warmth in which we get to experience their every note and nuance has brought all of us much gratitude and appreciation for the musicians and the music.
Immediately following a late night Sunday interview that I had with radio host/funny man Mal Sharpe on KCSM a phone call from Australia came in to the studio for me. It was a nice man who introduced himself as Barrie Hayman and proceeded to tell me that he had just listened to my interview and the songs they had played off of my CD. He said that the song, "If I Only Had a Brain", made him cry. It makes my husband cry, too. I love to make people cry. Anyway, Barrie ordered my CD from Amazon.com and looked forward to being able to play it on his radio station Downunder. We became fast friends, emailing eachother, talking about jazz and other life experiences and now I have the pleasure of meeting him face to face when he arrives in Sonoma on Sept. 8th. We'll take in a little wine tour, some lunch and what we intend will be a fun evening of jazz at The Lodge. I've got a trio behind me-some of the best- joining me, and maybe Barrie will sing a tune? There are very few barriers when you have the internet bringing us all a little bit closer.

Two very talented girlfriends of mine, Jaime Love and Julia Holsworth, wrote a musical based on a spoof of a 1977 beauty pageant entitled "The Ms. All American Housewife Pageant". It was very cute and funny and ran for 3 nights last week at the beautiful Nicholson Ranch Winery in Sonoma. Jaime asked me if I would do a walk-on part and be one of the entertainers that come out mid-show and do a tune. I said, "Sure- anything to hang out with you fun girls for a week!" Jaime said, "Oh great! Will you be Charo?" "Charo?" Well, what can I say? I never thought I'd have to channel Charo. Cuchi-cuchi! And for those of you who might be curious there is a picture of Charo in "photos".

This is a wonderful foundation created by my friend, Donna Barton, to support and encourage the creativity of local children by donating proceeds from concerts to pay for their art and music lessons, etc.. Legendary pianist, Larry Vuckovich, his quintet and I performed in the kick-off concert to a sellout crowd in February.

We 're gearing up to present our 2nd annual "Kids Perform for Kids Sake" show in April at The Sebastiani Theatre here in Sonoma. We had a successful first run last year and we were able to donate the proceeds to The Willmar Center for Bereaved Children and The Sonoma Childrens' Cancer Foundation. This year we are moving it to nicer digs and NelsonJobs.com will be sponsoring it. This is an opportunity for the talented youth of Sonoma to help out their community by doing what they do best-perform! The proceeds this year will be benefitting The Sonoma Valley Education Foundation and The Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation, two very worthwhile foundations that directly and indirectly benefit the kids of Sonoma.
I've got my two assistants on board who will be trained in the ins and outs of putting on a production of this type. They are 17 yr. old, Frances Hall and 15 yr. old, Mikeala Kalafate, two wonderfully spirited gals. Auditions will be held in the middle of January for any Sonoma youth who's got something to show off! Look for press releases in the local paper and listen to your local KSVY radio station for info. Here's to the kids! You gotta love 'em!

I was flown down to "The Land of Angels" to perform at a Katrina benefit at the request of executive chef, Mark Kearney, who put on the affair. It was hosted by Nicolette Sheridan of "Desparate Housewives" fame. The 'beautiful people' came out to support the cause and it was great. I always have the pleasure of being able to help out at benefits like this one. I also had the pleasure of meeting a fellow vocalist, Kevin Sasaki, and singing a few tunes with him.

Yes! That would be a show all about, well...me...AND my "imaginary friends". Jeff and Randy Sue, my co-writers among other things and I are currently developing this and are intending to open it around March, 2006, here in Sonoma, bound for...who knows?. It will wrap its filthy little hands around my jazz music, a few comedic characters currently hiding out in the closet and, get this, dancing. You'll just have to see it to believe it.

Some very good friends of ours, Jim and Cheryl D'Arezzo, flew Jeff and me down to their beautiful home in Glendale, CA recently so that I could perform for a very important fundraiser that they hosted. It was great fun! Thanks Jim and Cheryl!
